Mundu wraps up problems in instant messaging |

| Even
though the Internet has evolved since it first came
into being, instant messaging has not. Till recently,
there was no application that allowed one to have differently
identities from different clients in one interface.
Odigo, though made an attempt at solving this problem,
but was unable to allow simultaneous conferencing. However,
Mundu an application developed by Mumbai - based Geodesic
Information Systems has finally come out with a solution. |
| |
| The
Mundu Messenger is an instant messaging tool that lets
users communicate with one another instantly and seamlessly
across other major instant messaging services including
AIM, ICQ, MSN and Yahoo. Since users can cross - communicate
and cross - conference between five instant messaging
services, failures in single or even multiple services
would not prevent users from communicating with one
another. What is even more astonishing is you need not
even install Mundu on your system. Suppose a user at
MSN wants to chat with someone on ICQ, one can do so
by simply using a third party with Mundu installed as
an agent. |

| Kiran
Kulkarni, Director, Geodesic, is expectedly upbeat about
Mundu. He points out, "Developed only a few years
ago, the volume of instant messages is already nearing
the 1.9 billion phone calls placed per day. This market
is estimated to grow from 250 million users worldwide
in 2001 to around 500 million in 2004, a growth rate
of 100 percent. Howerever, the lack of inter-operability
drastically limits how people communicate with one another
through instant messaging applications. Only those who
are on the same network are abl;e to use instant messaging
effectively to reach each other. This creates 'islands'
of users within the internet. The danger of this island
phenomenon is an even greater problem when one takes
into account the fact that the emerging body of wireless
Instant Messenger users is projected to equal or eclipse
the nuber of PC based users in upcoming years." |
| |
| Mundu
is based on Mundu Interoperable Instant Messaging (MIIM)
and has been developed using MFC and ATL COM technologies.
The application which took six months to develop to
develop with a team of four people, comprise of three
different layers - the user interface layer, the service
layer and component layer. The programming for the application
was done using C, C++ and Socket Programming. The Mundu
server system ensures optimum performance as the architecture
is broken down into the following components that have
individual tasks - support server, init server, indication
server, messaging server, hub server and the main database
server. All these components are closely integrated
to provide the entire instant messaging fuctionality. |
